How do I get vitamin D and what is true about the sun?
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that is lacking in a lot of people. However, it is possible to get too much of it by consuming it from outside sources. Too much can become toxic since it is a fat -soluble vitamin. Exposing the skin to sunlight for about 15 minutes a day will produce enough vitamin D for the average person. Vitamin D helps our bodies use calcium to build strong bones and also is of benefit to our immune system. People can get too much of it by eating too many vitamin D fortified processed food products and taking too many supplements containing vitamin D. For those who get lots of sun in the summertime, it shouldn’t be a problem until fall and winter when more time is spent indoors. However, there is a huge segment of the population that hardly ever spends any time in the sun and others who use sunscreens to prevent cancer. Ask a doctor if 15 minutes of sun daily is okay according to your family history of skin and other cancers. If not, he may recommend a daily supplement of vitamin D.
