What does tanning lotion have in it that regular body lotion doesn’t?
While most tanning lotions contain a moisturizing agent, such as hempseed oil, and a SPF (sun protection factor), most moisturizing lotions do not contain tanning agents or an SPF. Tanning lotion as opposed to sun screen does not protect you from the suns harmful rays and are not intended for outdoor use. There are many different types of tanning lotions. All tanning lotions are used to accelerate the tanning process by increasing the blood flow to the skin and promoting the production of melanin. Many of the tanning agents contain a chemical referred to as DHA (dihydroxyacetone) which reacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells causing a chemical reaction produce a brown colour, these lotions are commonly referred to as Bronzers. Other common ingredients include copper, tea tree oil, or green tea extract. It is also common to find melanin added to tanning lotions to enhance your own body’s production and achieve a darker colour.
